What is The Burnt Saucepan?
The Burnt Saucepan is an annual celebration of glassmaking, bringing together artists from across the UK for a weekend of live demonstrations, collaboration and creativity at Teign Valley Glass Studio.
Named after the occasional mishaps that come with any creative process, the event celebrates experimentation, learning and the sharing of ideas within the glassmaking community. Over the years, the name has become part of its identity, recognised by glassmakers and visitors alike. It reflects the spirit of creativity, collaboration and discovery that sits at the heart of the weekend.
More than just a showcase, it’s an opportunity to see glassmakers share techniques, exchange ideas and create work in front of a live audience. Whether you’re a collector, maker, student or simply curious about the craft, this weekend offers a rare chance to experience an unprecedented amount of glassmaking packed into a working hot glass studio at its very best.
Saturday 4th July | Guest Artist Showcase
Saturday sees a special line-up of renowned artists come together for a unique day of demonstrations and collaboration.
Featuring Elliot Walker, winner of Netflix’s Blown Away, alongside Bethany Wood and Allister Malcolm of BBC’s Make It at Market, visitors will have the opportunity to watch acclaimed glassmakers at work and gain insight into the techniques and creative approaches behind their work.
Throughout the day, artists will demonstrate a variety of methods and create some stunning pieces live in the studio, making every session a little different from the last.
Alistair Malcolm will be demonstrating during the morning (from approximately 10am), with Elliot Walker and Bethany Wood taking to the studio during the afternoon (from approximately 2pm).
Sunday 5th July | Glassmakers’ Vessel Showcase
Sunday celebrates the wider glassmaking community with a showcase centred around one of the most enduring forms in glassmaking – the vessel.
This year’s challenge focuses on the humble jug – a deceptively simple form that offers endless opportunities for creativity, skill and personal expression.
It’s a fascinating chance to see artists supporting one another, sharing knowledge and demonstrating the incredible versatility of hot glass, potentially showcasing Venetian methods to Scandinavian designs!
