Glassmaking with Teign Valley Glass Studio (TVGS)

At TVGS, we take a practical approach, allowing you to learn new skills while creating meaningful everyday items. Immerse yourself in a 1.5 hour glassmaking session, expertly guided by our experienced instructors. Impress your loved ones by serving drinks in tumblers you’ve personally crafted. Our workshop emphasises practicality, allowing you to create 1 to 2 tumblers each, or more, based on your progress and mastery of the techniques taught.

Before diving into the tumbler-making process, you’ll receive a demonstration where our professional TVGS staff will teach you basic glassmaking skills and techniques. With step-by-step instructions and guidance, our skilled team will assist you in honing your craftsmanship and bringing your creative vision to life.

Your class will take place in a production glassmaking studio, where you’ll experience the intense heat of molten glass at over 1200°C. Before starting, we’ll provide essential safety information, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience with plenty of water breaks. Rest assured, all tools and materials will be provided.

Once your tumblers are complete, they will be carefully cooled overnight in our kilns, ensuring the highest quality craftsmanship (slower cooling produces superior glass items). After five days, they’ll be meticulously packed and ready for collection or delivery.* Enjoy the beauty of your handcrafted glass tumblers for many years to come!

Glass & Dine Frequently Asked Questions

(Main House of Marbles FAQ’s found here)

  • What if I am late? Do I lose my place?

We understand that unforeseen circumstances may cause you to be late. Your space is still booked in such cases, but we can only offer you a shorter workshop on the day. Our instructors are reserved specifically for you, and the course operates on a 1:1 ratio.

  • Can I cancel my course?

If you need to cancel your booking, we can reschedule it outside of 7 days notice of cancellation. However, if the cancellation occurs within 7 days of the scheduled date and you cannot attend, you can send a substitute person on the day to take your place.

  • What if the studio equipment breaks on the day?

While equipment malfunctions can occur, we do our best to ensure the course runs smoothly. In most instances, we can still proceed with the class. However, rescheduling may be necessary if there is a power cut or a major equipment failure.

  • What if I am sick or the instructor is ill on the day?

Illness can happen unexpectedly; in both instances, we should find replacement people to run or participate in the course, but no refunds are eligible. The gas is always burning, and the show must go on.

  • What if I have COVID?

If you're feeling up to it, we'll adapt with COVID-safe measures—please wear a mask throughout. Our air puffers mean there's no need for direct contact when blowing glass. If you're too unwell, our usual seven-day no-refund policy applies, but you can send someone in your place.

  • Is this hard?

Glassblowing is a challenging craft that requires time and practice to master, and it typically takes around ten years to become a proficient glassmaker. However, it is also an enjoyable and rewarding experience, and our team is here to support you and help you make the most of your time in the studio.

  • Can I make coloured glass?

Absolutely! You can create your one-of-a-kind pieces using either clear or coloured glass.

  • What is the minimum age for participants?

This course is suitable for participants aged 16 and above, or 12 accompanied by a parent or guardian.

  • What is the dress code?

We recommend wearing casual and comfortable clothing to ensure your comfort during the glassmaking process. The studio can get quite warm, so lightweight and breathable fabrics are ideal, but please do not wear shorts or skirts. Additionally, please wear flat, closed-toe shoes for safety purposes. It's also a good idea to bring a change of top just in case. Our evening restaurant has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, so you can dress in whatever makes you feel comfortable.

  • Where can I freshen up?

Clean and spacious lavatories are conveniently located just outside the glass studio, providing ample space to freshen up.

  • Where are Teign Valley Glass Studio and The Old Pottery Restaurant?

You can find both the Teign Valley Glass Studio and The Old Pottery Restaurant within House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey. They are situated next to each other, accessible through the Glass Museum at the visitor site.

  • Is there parking available at House of Marbles?

There is ample free parking on-site for your convenience. We recommend using the second entrance for better accessibility when leaving at the end of your visit.
